CHARACTER
CHARACTER NAME: Terry Sheridan
SERIES: Lara Croft: Tomb Raider - The Cradle of Life
CANON POINT: Post-Death
LOSS: The location of Pandora’s Box. Terry and Lara spend a lot of time hunting for the map to lead them to it, and the Cradle of Life, where the box is stored, is, ironically, where he died. He’ll forget the exact location, name and interior appearance of the Cradle of Life.

ABOUT THE CHARACTER: Terry Sheridan isn’t a complicated man.

A former Commando in the Royal Marines, Terry Sheridan was a well-known mercenary. He was considered a traitor to the British Government, as well as being high on all Most Wanted lists before his arrest and life sentencing in Borla Karla, Kazakhstan … And it was an actual life sentence.

A Scotsman by nationality, Terry didn’t care who he worked for, as long as he got paid to do it. He even worked for the renowned crime lord Chen Lo, the head a criminal group known throughout China and Asia to be thieves of Ancient Artifacts to sell onto the highest bidder. Sheridan had a “falling out” with Chen Lo when he betrayed him and made off with some of his goods when he got a better price himself.

At some point, he was in a relationship with Lady Lara Croft, The Countess of Abingdon. Lara fell in love with the roguish Terry, as he shared a similar flair for antiquities, but he ended up betraying her, as well as anyone else, it seems, for the right price. He stole and sold off some of Lara’s archaeological finds, as well as finds belonging to the US Government. He soon found himself near the top of most wanted lists worldwide.

He was eventually caught by MI6 and sentenced to life imprisonment in Borla Karla. This ended prematurely, however, when Lara, realising she needed to deal with Chen Lo, cut a deal with MI6 to release Terry early. MI6 had approached Lady Croft to retrieve something from a billionaire biologist who threatened the entire world with what he had uncovered. Lara’s sole condition for taking on the mission was the release of Terry, who had intimate knowledge of Chen Lo and how he operates.

Despite, at first, not being armed, Terry proves instrumental in finding an orb, stolen from Lara in the mythical Lunar Temple of Alexander the Great. The orb turns out to be a map to where one can find the legendary Pandora’s Box. Inside is a plague that could wipe out half of the world.

After recovering the orb from Jonathan Reiss, the Nobel Peace Prize winner turned bioterrorist, Lara leaves Terry in Hong Kong, handcuffed in a boat on the Kowloon Harbour. She leaves him as they were getting close, fearing that he might betray her again and she would be forced to kill him.

Terry, however, can’t let things go and, after escaping the boat in Kowloon, follows Lara to Africa, and into the Cradle of Life itself. After Reiss is killed, being knocked into the acid-like lake surrounding the Box, Terry tends to Lara’s wounds. Touched that he came for her, Lara thanks him with a kiss. But when they try to leave, Terry tries to take the Box, against Lara’s wishes. His greed shows through, not wanting to leave it behind, as they’ve both fought so hard for it. Lara tries to persuade him to leave it alone, but Terry is only interested in taking the box to sell, as compensation for actually finding it.

Terry confronts Lara, and she ends up shooting him in the chest in self-defence, as Terry was going for his own gun. She leaves his body in the Cradle of Life, after returning Pandora’s Box to its rightful resting place.

Terry is a resourceful man, having contacts worldwide to supply him with weapons, equipment and ways out. He’s shown to have a charming, if sometimes abrasive and cocky personality, which he, no doubt, uses to secure these contacts, as well as his impressive skill set and track record. His cockiness shows in the way that he assumes Lara wouldn’t kill him because she had feelings for him. This, of course, proved fatal. The way he quips with Lara on their way into Shanghai and Hong Kong shows how much he and Lara think alike. He seems to share her enthusiasm for thrills, but can sometimes pull back and be more cautious, especially when he knows what he’s going to walk into. He’s not above taking risks, however, showing Lara how to get to Chen Lo, knowing full well that he wasn’t welcome, knowing that Lara would protect him and, hopefully, get Chen Lo off his back for good. This shows him being able to manipulate a situation to his advantage.

In summary, Terry Sheridan is a dangerous individual. While he may seem charming and witty on the outside, it’s a mask for his true intentions. What was said at the beginning is true; He isn’t a complicated man. He knows what he wants, has the ability and skills to get it, and won’t let anything stand in his way. Even with the promise of a new identity, a new life, and even a renewed chance at a relationship with a woman who loves him, Terry chooses to try and earn money, and it is ultimately his downfall.

ABILITIES: Terry is an ex-Royal Marine, and a graduate of the Commando course. He knows how to handle himself in a fight, whether with guns, or hand-to-hand. He is able to use a number of weapons, from firearms to bare-handed. He has an eye for antiquities and a flair for adventure equal to Lara Croft, but can often be seen holding back and assessing situations, rather than rushing in head first like Lara is shown to do.

He’s in peak physical health, if a bit underfed, from being in prison.

Other than that… a generic, run-of-the-mill human being, with no magical or otherworldly skill.

THIRD-PERSON WRITING SAMPLE: Morning finds Terry Sheridan in his cell. In fact, any day finds him there. Such is life in one of the highest security prisons in the world. He’s even in solitary. Can’t say he blames them, though. He knows exactly what he’d do to the first prisoner to even look at him in a funny way.

It’s interesting, though. Give MI6 the run-around for a few years and they lock you up, nice and safe, in a secure box. Food, exercise, alone time… What more could a man want? Terry doesn’t know. But he knows what he wants…

Sometimes, he can distract himself from it. For days at a time, sometimes. But it always comes back to bite him in the arse, that one thought: Did I make a huge mistake turning her away?

Today, it happened when he was doing pull-ups on the grid-like ceiling of his cell. And it’s enough to cause him to stop. He drops from the bars, looking up into the glaring strip-lighting, designed for maximum discomfort, of course, and sighs deeply.

“No sense worrying about it now, Terry.” He says to himself in a gruff voice, his Scottish accent made all the rougher by misuse. He talks to himself just to make sure he doesn’t actually lose his voice entirely. “She’ll never take you back now. You chose your path.”

There were times that he wondered if this was all worth it. To turn rogue against Britan, make enemies of America, and turn his back on a woman who loved him… For what? A dark, dingy cell in Kazakhstan? And then he thinks… Was it worth it?

Of course it fucking was.

With a grin on his face, Terry jumps up, grabbing the bars, and swinging himself up, hooking his boots in to continue his workout. Not knowing that his luck was about to change by a certain woman wearing a fur coat about to walk into his cell…

FIRST-PERSON JOURNAL SAMPLE: Terry @ Dear Mun

INTENT: I would like the chance to play Terry because he's so morally ambiguous. He would still sell people out to the highest bidder, and may go as far as help the First Gens for the right price.
